About This Wine

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino from Tenute Silvio Nardi is a benchmark expression of Sangiovese Grosso from one of the appellation’s historic estates. Sourced primarily from the Casale del Bosco and Manachiara vineyards, the wine is aged in a combination of French and Slavonian oak, allowing the pure cherry-and-earth character of the grape to shine through.

The 2019 vintage is widely regarded as one of the great recent years for Montalcino, delivering wines of ripe fruit, firm structure and excellent aging potential. Nardi’s rendition is nuanced rather than blockbuster, showing the balance and finesse that has defined the house since 1950.

Drinking well now with air, this bottle will reward patience, gaining complexity and secondary character over the next decade or more.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep ruby with garnet reflections at the rim, translucent and bright.

Nose: Aromas of sour cherry, dried rose petal, tobacco leaf, sweet balsamic herbs and a whisper of leather and cedar.

Palate: Medium to full-bodied with vibrant acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins framing red cherry, plum, blood orange and savoury herb notes; a hint of espresso and forest floor adds depth.

Finish: Long, structured and savoury, closing on dried herbs, mineral tones and lingering red fruit.

Rating

93/100

A polished, classically styled Brunello from a very strong vintage that balances power with the elegance the estate is known for.

The Vintage

2019 in Montalcino delivered a balanced, near-ideal growing season with a cool spring, warm summer moderated by diurnal shifts, and a dry, sunny harvest. The result is Brunelli with ripe fruit, firm acidity, refined tannins and excellent aging potential — widely rated among the top vintages of the decade.

Food Pairings

  • Bistecca alla Fiorentina — the wine’s acidity and tannin cut through the char and fat of Tuscan grilled beef.
  • Wild boar ragu with pappardelle — a classic regional pairing where earthy game meets Sangiovese’s savoury edge.
  • Aged Pecorino Toscano — nutty, salty cheese echoes the wine’s structure and dried-fruit tones.

Serving & Cellaring

Decant for 60-90 minutes to open the aromatics and soften the youthful tannins.

Built for the long haul — will drink well from 2026 and hold gracefully through the late 2030s if stored on its side at 12-14 C in stable humidity.

The Winery

Tenute Silvio Nardi was founded in 1950 when Silvio Nardi purchased the Casale del Bosco estate in the northwest of Montalcino, becoming one of the pioneering producers of Brunello. Today led by his daughter Emilia Nardi, the estate farms two distinct properties — Casale del Bosco and Manachiara — allowing for a diversity of terroir expressions. The house style is elegant, aromatic and classically structured, and Nardi is credited with helping put Brunello di Montalcino on the international map.
